Forthcoming Book from Our Head of Research
We are excited to announce that Dr. Caleb Collier, Co-founder and Head of Research at the Institute for Self-Directed Learning, has a new book in press titled Theoretical and Historical Evolutions of Self-Directed Learning: The Case for Learner-Led Education.
In this book, Dr. Collier documents the rich history of self-directed learning, showcasing examples from multiple cultural and historical settings in the hopes of informing post-pandemic pedagogies and practices. The book argues that learner-led pedagogies are not really a new approach to schooling, but actually predate “traditional” approaches to education.
Self-directed learning, then, is not an untested proposition: it has worked in lots of places over the centuries!
Along with the historical overview, the book chronicles current schools practicing self-directed learning and highlights some of their commonalities, namely the role of the educator, the role of the learner, and the design of the environment. The book culminates with a vision of education that has at its center flourishing individuals that in turn contribute to cultivating a flourishing society.
This book is ideal for scholars and researchers looking to expand their knowledge of learner-led pedagogies. The book also speaks to educators, school leaders, and parents who want to further explore the history and theoretical foundations of self-directed learning.
